Student: Levels of Government in California

You will identify your local, state and federal elected officials.
The instructions below are for students who would like to complete this lesson without a teacher’s direction.

When you click on the links below they will take you to a web site outside LearnCalifornia.org, and a new window will open.


  1. Download and print the Elected Officials Worksheet.
  2. To find your President, Vice President and Senators, click on Your Representatives then click on the word [MORE…] next to the Federal section. Enter this information on your Elected Officials Worksheet.
  3. To find your State Legislative Offices, click on Your Representatives then click on the word [MORE…] next to the California section to find the State elected officials. Enter this information on your Elected Officials Worksheet.
  4. To find your congressman, go to Find Your Representative. Click on United States Congress to find your Congressman. A page will come up asking for your state and zip code. Enter this information and you will be taken to a page allowing you to email your congressman. Your congressman will be listed at the top of the page. (Some zip codes are in more than one representatives’ district. In that case you will need to enter the +4 digits of your zip code. If you don’t know these, click on the blue ZIP+4 Lookup. This will take you to the Postal service ZIP+4 lookup site. Enter your home address, city and state, then click on process. Your +4 zip code will be returned to you. Click on the BACK button until you return to the Write Your Representative site where you can enter the entire zip code to find your Congressman) Fill in the information on your Elected Officials Worksheet.
  5. To find your State Senate and State Assembly. Go to Find Your Representative. Click on State Senate and State Assembly. Type in your zip code. A Page will show both your State Senator and Assembly Member. Find other elected officers in your county or city. This information can often be found on the California Counties’ Web sites or California Cities Online web sites.
