1960 Democratic National Convention ->

In 1956 the Republican Party held its national convention in California for the first time.  From August 23rd-26th the Republican Party met at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.  The convention culminated in the nomination of incumbent president Dwight Eisenhower for a second term.

Many within the party, however, wished to replace Richard Nixon as the vice presidential candidate.  One of the strongest contenders was the convention's host, California Governor Goodwin Knight.  In the end the delegates again selected Nixon to run with Eisenhower.  The duo subsequently waged a second successful campaign for the White House.
