New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy announced his intention to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in March 1968.  He began a spirited campaign to gather the support of Democratic Convention delegates.  One of his greatest successes was winning the California Democratic presidential primary on June 4th.  Tragedy struck shortly thereafter, however.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on June 5th, Kennedy concluded his California victory speech in the Embassy Room of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.  While walking through a pantry area between the ballroom and the hotel's kitchen after the speech, Kennedy was shot three times.  His wounds proved fatal, and he died the next day.  Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of the assassination on April 17, 1969.

Robert Kennedy's death shocked the nation, contributing to the widespread social chaos and turmoil that accompanied the 1968 presidential election.  As a direct result of the assassination, the US Secret Service now provides security for presidential candidates.
