To celebrate construction of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge, a commemorative fair known as the Golden Gate International Exposition was held on Treasure Island in 1939–1940. The fair was located on an artificial island attached to Yerba Buena Island and constructed in part from material from the tunnel bored through the island. The GGIE opened February 19, 1939, and was to run for only one year, but its success lead to a second year. The "Pageant of the Pacific" also emphasized and promoted unity among Pacific nations, many of which built exhibits and pavilions on the grounds. The fair closed on September 29, 1940.
