The first Californians arrived in California roughly 12,000 years ago, descendants of Siberian hunters who crossed the Bering Stait during the last Ice Age. For thousands of years, they exploited the environment by hunting, fishing and gathering, and developed a remarkable stable culture. However, their world was shaken by the Spanish colonization that began in 1769 and the American onslaught of 1849.
