South of the Border

<- Where to Go?

What to Do? ->

For many Californians, no vacation to the south state was complete without a trip across the border into Mexico. Escorted sightseeing excursions offered visitors a glimpse at life in another country from the comfort and safety of a spring wagon or touring car.

In the 1920s, with the onset of prohibition in the United States, visitation to Baja California increased dramatically. Mexico had no laws barring the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages, so Californians in increasing numbers ventured across the international line to enjoy their favorite libations at saloons ranging from the A.B.W. Club in Algodones near the Colorado River, to Tijuana's Mexicali Bar.

For vacationers seeking a more exclusive destination, the resort and racetrack at Agua Caliente near Tijuana opened in 1928. It attracted Hollywood celebrities and well-heeled, if less well known, Californians alike.
