As placer deposits began to run dry by the early 1850s, a new, more elaborate form of mining flourished in the California foothills, using massive jets of water to blast gold bearing sediments. This quickly provoked a lengthy legal and political battle with Central Valley farmers, who had to deal with the consequences of mining runoff.
