Escape LA: Top Places to Visit From Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a hub for quick escapes — within a few hours you can reach desert, coast, mountain, and island. These are the standard day-trip and weekend-getaway picks that leave from LA.

Joshua Tree

About three hours east, Joshua Tree National Park is the desert trip: hiking among the namesake trees and boulders, stargazing at night, and stops in town at Pappy & Harriet’s (live music, barbecue) and the Integratron near Landers. Camp or day-trip; go midweek to avoid crowds.

Ojai

An hour and a half northwest, Ojai is a small valley town known for a Spanish-style arcade, spas like the Ojai Valley Inn, and hiking in Los Padres National Forest. It’s an easy half-day of browsing shops and orchards.

Santa Barbara

Under two hours north, Santa Barbara has beaches (East Beach, Butterfly Beach), the Funk Zone wine district, and the Santa Ynez Valley wine country inland. State Street is the walkable core for shops and restaurants.

Catalina Island

A one-hour ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro, Catalina Island offers diving, fishing, and the beaches of Avalon and Descanso. It’s car-light, so most people walk or rent a golf cart. Good for a day or an overnight.

Laguna Beach

An hour south, Laguna Beach mixes coves (Crystal Cove, Main Beach) with an art scene and the summer Festival of the Arts / Pageant of the Masters. The downtown has galleries and upscale shops.

Mammoth Lakes

Five-plus hours northeast, Mammoth Lakes is the winter ski trip (Mammoth Mountain, November-June) and a summer base for hiking, mountain biking, and lake camping. A longer haul, but the only true mountain option on this list.

San Diego and Ventura

Two hours south, San Diego has the Zoo, Balboa Park, and beaches like Coronado and La Jolla. An hour north, Ventura is a low-key beach town with the Ventura Pier and the ferry to Channel Islands National Park. Both work as day trips or overnights.

Good to Know

Most of these are within a 2-hour drive except Mammoth (5+ hours) and Joshua Tree (3 hours). Traffic on the 5, 101, and I-10 adds time on weekends — leave early. Coastal spots are busiest in summer; desert and mountain trips depend on season (hot summers, snowy winters).
