The U.S. West Coast runs from the redwood edge of California up through Oregon and Washington, with a mix of coast, cities, and wine country. This is a straight list of the stops that are worth building a trip around — most are in California, with Portland and Seattle as the Pacific Northwest bookends.
California’s Central Coast and Big Sur
Big Sur is the 90-mile cliff section of Highway 1 between Monterey and San Simeon — Pfeiffer Beach, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and McWay Falls (a waterfall onto the beach). South of it, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and Pismo Beach; north, the Hearst Castle at San Simeon. The road is prone to slide closures, so check before driving.
Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea
Monterey has the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row; Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small cottage town with galleries and Carmel Beach. Both have Spanish mission sites — Carmel Mission and San Carlos Borroméo. Family-friendly and compact.
San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge
San Francisco centers on the Golden Gate Bridge, plus Alcatraz, the neighborhoods (Chinatown, the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square), Fisherman’s Wharf food, and Twin Peaks for the view. Layer for fog — it is cooler than the rest of the coast most of the year.
Portland and the Pacific Northwest
Portland is the eccentric one — food carts, craft breweries, Washington Park’s rose garden and Forest Park, and a strong coffee scene. Nearby: the Columbia River Gorge (Multnomah Falls) and Mount Hood. A different climate and feel from California.
Seattle and the Emerald City
Seattle has the Space Needle, Pike Place Market (the fish-throw), and a long coffee tradition (the Starbucks Reserve Roastery). It is green, wet, and geared to water and mountains — Mount Rainier and the ferries.
San Diego and the Southern California Coast
San Diego is the warm, flat end of the coast — Mission Beach and Coronado for sand, the Gaslamp Quarter for history and nightlife, and Balboa Park with the San Diego Zoo. Family-oriented and consistently sunny.
Napa Valley and Wine Country
Napa Valley, north of San Francisco, is the marquee wine region — a scenic drive of wineries from boutique to large, with Yountville and St. Helena as the food-and-shopping towns. Tastings and dinners book out in harvest (fall).
Conclusion
A West Coast trip is really several trips: the California coast (Highway 1), the cities (SF, San Diego, Portland, Seattle), and the wine (Napa, Sonoma). Drive the coast north-to-south for the best views, but budget time — the distance from San Diego to Seattle is over 1,200 miles. Pick two or three of these rather than all of them in one pass.
