Santa Rosa sits in the middle of Sonoma County and makes a practical home base for wine country, with the Charles M. Schulz Museum, Luther Burbank gardens, and Spring Lake Park all inside the city. It’s also an easy jump to the Sonoma Coast, Bodega Bay, and the Russian River.
Wineries and Tastings
Santa Rosa is surrounded by Sonoma County vineyards, and several well-known tasting rooms are right in the city. Matanzas Creek, Paradise Ridge, DeLoach, Merry Edwards, and Russian River Vineyards are all within a short drive, pouring everything from Russian River Pinot Noir to Alexander Valley Cabernet.
Most wineries offer seated tastings; it’s worth booking ahead on weekends. If you want context on how the wine is made, the smaller family-run spots are usually happy to walk you through the cellar.
Parks and Outdoor Time
Spring Lake Park is the local favorite: a flat loop trail around the lake, picnic lawns, and a swim area that opens in summer. Annadel State Park backs right up to it for longer hikes through oak woodland.
The Luther Burbank Home & Gardens is an easy half-day stop. The gardens are free to walk and show many of the plant varieties Burbank developed.
Museums and Culture
The Charles M. Schulz Museum is the big draw — original Peanuts artwork, a theater, and a sculpture garden with Snoopy. The Museum of Sonoma County, a few blocks away downtown, runs rotating art and history shows.
Events and Nightlife
The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts books concerts, theater, and speaker events year-round. From May through September, the Wednesday Night Market closes part of downtown for food trucks, craft stalls, and live music — a good, low-key evening if you’re already in town.
Eating and Shopping
Santa Rosa’s restaurant scene leans farm-to-table because the farms are nearby. The downtown and Railroad Square areas have the widest pick, from taquerias to Italian. The year-round farmers’ market (Saturday mornings downtown) is the place to grab produce and cheese.
Easy Day Trips
- Sonoma Coast — rugged bluffs and beaches at Goat Rock and Wright’s Beach, about 45 minutes west.
- Bodega Bay — a working fishing harbor with clam chowder and whale-watching in season.
- Russian River — more wine, plus canoeing and redwoods at Armstrong Woods.
Planning Your Visit
The 101 runs straight through town, so Santa Rosa is an easy stop between San Francisco and the wine country. Spring and fall are the calmest seasons for tasting; summer books up fast for events.
