Cultural Events in Los Angeles: Discover & Enjoy

Los Angeles spreads its cultural calendar across museums, music festivals, theaters, and dance companies, and most of it is in distinct clusters, downtown and the Miracle Mile for museums, Hollywood and the Music Center for performance. The useful move is to pick one cluster per day rather than fight traffic across the region. Here is what is actually worth a slot.

Art

LA’s museum spine runs along Wilshire Boulevard’s Miracle Mile. LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) holds a broad collection from antiquities to contemporary, and its outdoor installations (including the well-known lamp posts) are free to walk. The Broad, next to it, is a free contemporary museum with a deep collection, Koons, Basquiat, Kusama, and timed-entry reserve-ahead popularity. The Getty Center (up in the Brentwood hills, free admission, paid parking) and Getty Villa (Malibu, on classical antiquities) are the city’s other anchor institutions. Gagosian and other galleries around Beverly Hills and Culver City show blue-chip contemporary work, mostly free to enter.

Music festivals

A note on geography: the biggest “LA” festivals often are not in the city. Coachella and Stagecoach are in Indio (Coachella Valley, ~2.5 hours east). Outside Lands is in San Francisco. Within reach of LA proper or its county: Hard Summer (electronic, summer, venue varies), FYF (when it runs, indie/alternative), and the Hollywood Bowl summer series, which is the reliable local one, with the LA Phil, touring acts, and movie-in-concert nights. For jazz, the JazzReggae Festival at UCLA is a long-running spring event.

Theater

The main houses cluster in downtown LA’s Theater District and Hollywood. The Ahmanson and the Mark Taper Forum (both at the Music Center) host touring Broadway and new work; the Pantages in Hollywood is the main touring-Broadway house (Hamilton, The Lion King, and similar run here). Geffen Playhouse near UCLA does established and new plays. Touring productions and limited runs fill these, so check the season schedule, the marquee names change yearly.

Dance and community festivals

The Music Center and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion host touring ballet and contemporary companies; Glorya Kaufman at USC is the local training-and-performance hub. For cultural festivals, the standouts are neighborhood-based: Chinese New Year (Chinatown, winter), Fiesta Broadway (downtown, spring), LA Pride (June), and the LA County Fair (Pomona, fall). These are the events that actually reflect the city’s communities, more than any single venue.

How to find what’s on

The most reliable approach is to check each institution’s own calendar plus the major listing sites a few weeks out, because LA show schedules turn over fast and many events are one weekend only. Reserve Broad and Getty tickets ahead (both are popular and free), and buy theater tickets as soon as a show you want is announced, the good seats go first.
