California’s 840-mile coastline has beaches that work well for families — gentle surf, tide pools, and amenities like restrooms, playgrounds, and nearby food. Here are ten that parents and kids tend to return to, from San Diego up to San Luis Obispo County.
Coronado Beach
Coronado Beach, in San Diego County, is consistently ranked among the best family beaches in the country. The sand is soft, the waves are gentle, and the iconic Hotel del Coronado sits right on the shore. At low tide you can walk out to a sunken shipwreck and the tide pools in front of the hotel. Del Beach rents chairs and cabanas and serves food and drinks on the sand.
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is a long, wide stretch of sand in San Diego — good for swimming, boogie boarding, and beginner surf. At low tide the rocky edges become tide pools full of crabs and small fish, which is a free, hands-on lesson for kids. Kellogg Park, at the north end, has a beachside playground.
