Dublin Delights 101: Fun Things to Do in Dublin California

Dublin is a suburban city of about 70,000 in the Tri-Valley, east of San Francisco across the Calaveras Reservoir. It is not a tourist destination in the usual sense, but it is a practical, family-oriented stop with a solid aquatic center, good parks, and a real Irish-heritage festival. If you are in the East Bay with kids or passing through on 580, these are the stops worth your time.

Family and water

The Wave. A year-round aquatic center with water slides, a lazy river, a lap pool, and a children’s play area. It is the summer draw for the whole valley; check the City of Dublin site for open-swim hours and day-pass prices, since they vary by season.

Emerald Glen Park. The main community park: playgrounds, a splash pad (summer), sports fields, picnic areas, and a rose garden. Flat and easy, good for a low-key morning.

Hacienda Crossings. A large open-air shopping center with restaurants and an IMAX-equipped movie theater. Useful if you want air conditioning and a meal rather than a sight.

Outdoors

  • Emerald Glen Park trails. Short, paved and dirt loops through the park and along the Arroyo; fine for strollers and dogs on leash.
  • Dublin Hills Regional Open Space. Rolling grassland east of town with views toward Mount Diablo and, in wet springs, wildflower blooms. The trails are exposed, so go early in summer.
  • Fallon Sports Park. Baseball, basketball, soccer, and open field space; the local league and pickup scene.

History and the Irish connection

Dublin Heritage Park & Museums is a 10-acre site with restored historic buildings, a pioneer cemetery, and picnic spots; it is the place to learn how the agricultural town was settled. The city leans into its name with an annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival (a fun run, live Irish music and dance, and food) that draws a bigger crowd than you would expect for a suburb. Dates shift yearly, so check the city events calendar.

Practical notes

Dublin is car-dependent; BART has a Dublin/Pleasanton station that connects to Oakland and San Francisco if you would rather not drive. Summer days are hot and dry, winter is mild. Most of this is free or low-cost except The Wave and movies; none of it needs a reservation. If you are basing yourself in the Tri-Valley for wine (Livermore is 15 minutes north), Dublin makes an easy home-base stop with the kids.
