Hydraulic Mining's Effects on Employment

There now is, and for some two years past has been much complaint among a large class of our population about a lack of employment; and this, among uninformed person, had generally been attributed to a giving out of the mines…..[Actually] by the recent improvements which have been introduced into mining operations, a large number of manual labor has been dispensed with. Four or five men will do more work with a hydraulic hose than fifty men could do formerly with the appliances in vogue…..[Accordingly] the hydraulic hose is throwing multitudes of miner out of employment. (California Mining Journal, 1856)
