Farmer's Testimony

<-- Go Back

This substance [debris] is entirely destructive to all vegetation, except the willow and the cottonwood. There are statements made as to the richness of it, and its great value for potato raising. The facts are, that the stream on which I live is a large potato raising section, and potatoes grow, without exception, on the original soil that has been protected by levees. There is only now and then a piece that will grow potatoes, of the filled land [covered with debris] and then it only gives a very small yield. (Testimony given by James Keyes, farmer, before California legislative hearing, 1878)
