Experience Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is the flagship unit of the Sacramento NWR Complex, a set of federal refuges in the rice-and-wetland country of the Sacramento Valley, about 75 miles north of Sacramento near Willows. It is a winter birding destination first — the flooded fields draw huge numbers of ducks and geese — and a quiet place the rest of the year.

What You’ll See

In peak season (roughly November through February) the refuge hosts on the order of 500,000 ducks and 250,000 geese, plus shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds — close to 300 bird species across the year. The complex as a whole comprises five National Wildlife Refuges and three Wildlife Management Areas, with wetlands, grasslands, and riparian habitat that also hold deer, coyotes, beavers, reptiles, and amphibians.

Visiting

  • Auto tour — a 6-mile one-way driving loop, the standard way to see the refuge (slow, windows down).
  • Walking trail — a 2-mile trail off the auto route.
  • Accessibility — viewing platforms and the lot are wheelchair accessible.
  • Facilities — the visitor center’s hours and any remodeling change; check the U.S. Fish & Wildlife page before you go, and note hunting is allowed in season on parts of the complex.

Bring binoculars and a scope; the birds are often at distance across the water. Leashed pets and the speed limit on the auto tour are enforced to protect wildlife.

Conclusion

The Sacramento NWR is worth the drive if you bird or want a quiet wetland walk in winter — go mid-week and early for the most activity and the best light. It is less of a destination outside the migration season, when the fields are dry and the wildlife scatters. Confirm the auto-tour hours and any visitor-center status on the official FWS site before leaving Sacramento, since the rural location means there is nothing nearby if it is closed.
