Cabo San Lucas sits at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Sur, across the Sea of Cortez from the mainland, and it is the standard fly-in beach trip from Southern California (direct flights from LAX and San Diego run a few hours). It pairs a marina town (Cabo San Lucas) with a quieter colonial town (San José del Cabo) just north, and the draw is beach, sportfishing, and whale watching rather than sightseeing. Plan around the seasons: whales in winter, heat in summer.
Medano Beach
Medano Beach is the main swim-and-social beach in Cabo San Lucas, the one with the calmest water (the bay is sheltered) and the string of beach clubs and restaurants. It is the place for swimming, volleyball, and jet skiing; the rest of the Cabo shoreline is rougher and not safe for swimming, so Medano is where the beach day happens. The sand is public; the chairs and service are the clubs’.
Land’s End and Lover’s Beach
The Land’s End rock formations mark the point where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, with El Arco (the Arch) as the photo stop. You reach it by water taxi or tour from the marina; Lover’s Beach sits just inside the arch, accessible only by boat, with the calm Sea of Cortez side swimmable and the Pacific side a rough surf beach. Boat tours run the loop and often add a stop at the sea lion colony.
San José del Cabo
The sister town 20 miles north is the older, quieter one: Plaza Mijares with the mission church and town hall, the art galleries, and the estuary (a bird-watching spot). Palmilla just south has the golf and the resorts. It is the cultural counterpoint to Cabo San Lucas’ party strip, and the Thursday-night Art Walk (Thursday evening, gallery district) is the regular event.
Whale watching and water sports
Humpback and gray whales pass the cape mid-December to early April; tours leave from the marina. The rest of the year the water sports fill in: snorkel trips to Chileno and Santa Maria bays, Cabo is one of the top deep-sea fishing spots (marlin, dorado), and there is zip-lining and ATV touring in the outback. Note the water is warm but the Pacific side is not a swimming beach; pick the bay side.

- When. Whales Dec-April; spring and fall are the shoulder-season sweet spots before the summer humidity.
- Getting there. Fly to SJD (Los Cabos); Cabo San Lucas is 30-45 min south of the airport.
