Franklin D. Roosevelt 's First Two Terms
1932 and 1934

Wartime President ->

When the Democratic National Convention opened amidst the Great Depression in 1932, a deadlock existed between three candidates: Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), Al Smith, and John Nance Garner. To break the stalemate, the FDR and Garner camps struck a deal whereby Garner withdrew his candidacy and instead served as FDR's running mate. William McAdoo, who headed California's slate of delegates, switched the state's votes from Garner to Roosevelt and in so doing opened the door that led to FDR's nomination. Roosevelt subsequently won the presidency in a landslide victory over incumbent President Herbert Hoover, who had become a scapegoat for the nation's economic woes.

Humorist Will Rogers campaigned for FDR during the 1932 election, and afterward used his popular radio show to advance the President's reform agenda. Many of Roosevelt's New Deal programs rapidly gained widespread popularity, earning him and Garner the Democratic Party's nomination in 1936.  Alf Landon, Governor of Kansas, won the Republican Party's nomination after beating several challengers including Californians Herbert Hoover, Francis Townsend, and Earl Warren. Landon suffered a decisive defeat to FDR, who was elected for a second term as president after gaining all but eight Electoral College votes.
