San Diego works best as a collection of neighborhoods rather than one downtown, which is the main planning point most visitors miss. The Zoo and Balboa Park sit inland, the bayfront (Midway, harbor) is downtown, and the coast (La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado) runs north and south. Pick a base near the cluster you care about and you will spend less time in traffic.
When to go
San Diego’s climate is mild year-round, but it is not the constant sun the postcards imply. Beaches
The county has 30-plus beaches, and they are not interchangeable. La Jolla Shores is the family and kayak pick, calm and wide. Windansea, also in La Jolla, is the experienced-surfer break with the cliff backdrop. Pacific and Mission Beaches share a boardwalk and a party scene. Coronado’s central beach is broad and gentle, good for a resort day. Tourmaline is the mellow longboard spot. Check the specific beach’s swim conditions and lifeguard status rather than assuming the whole coast is the same.
Neighborhoods
Downtown holds the Gaslamp Quarter (nightlife and historic buildings), Little Italy (restaurants, a big Saturday market), and Petco Park. Old Town is the Mexican-heritage district with shops and early California history. Point Loma gives the cliff views at Sunset Cliffs and the Liberty Station arts-and-market complex on the old naval air station. North Park and South Park are the inland food-and-brewery neighborhoods, walkable and less touristy than the coast.
The park and the museums
Balboa Park is the cultural core: the Zoo, the Natural History Museum, the Air & Space Museum, the Museum of Art, the Museum of Us, and a cluster of gardens, most in the Spanish Colonial buildings from the 1915 expo. The Zoo alone is a half-day; pair it with one or two museums rather than trying the whole park in one visit. The USS Midway Museum, moored downtown, is a self-guided walk through a retired carrier with docents who served on her.
Getting around
A car is the flexible choice if you leave the city core, since the spread-out layout makes transit slow between clusters. The trolley and buses cover downtown, Old Town, and the border; the Coaster and Pacific Surfliner trains run the coast. Staying in a walkable beach town (Pacific or Mission Beach) lets you skip the car for local trips, and rideshare fills the gaps. Check the tide and wind before any cliff or kayak plan, the coast changes fast.
