What You Actually Need: 45 Hours Every Four Years

Every California salesperson and broker license requires 45 hours of DRE-approved continuing education (CE) within the four years before your license expires. How those hours break down depends on whether it’s your first renewal:

First-time renewal:

• Five separate 3-hour mandatory courses (15 hours total): Agency, Fair Housing (must include an interactive component), Trust Fund Handling, Ethics, and Risk Management

Timing: Don’t Cut It as Close as You Might Think

The DRE grants 8 hours of reading credit per 24-hour period for self-study courses, which means the 45-hour package takes a minimum of 6 days to complete even if you’re working through it nonstop — you can’t compress it into a weekend cram session no matter how fast you read. If you fail a course’s final exam, you get one retake with different questions; fail that too, and you’re re-enrolled in the course at no charge but have to redo the hours before trying again.

Your CE has to be completed within the four years immediately preceding your renewal application, and the deadline is your license’s actual expiration date, not some earlier internal cutoff. Check your expiration date directly through the DRE’s eLicensing system rather than guessing from memory.

If You Miss the Deadline

California gives you a two-year grace period to renew a lapsed license, but you’ll pay a late fee and your license shows as expired in the meantime, meaning you can’t legally practice. Miss the full two years, and you forfeit your renewal rights entirely — at that point you’d need to start over with the full pre-licensing process and exam, not just catch up on CE hours. Given that risk, it’s worth building in a buffer rather than planning to finish CE the week your license expires.

CE courses can be completed online or in person through any DRE-approved provider — there’s no requirement to use a specific company. Before enrolling, confirm two things directly on the provider’s site: that they’re a current DRE-approved provider (searchable on the DRE’s own provider lookup), and that their course package actually matches your renewal type (first-time vs. subsequent) rather than assuming a generic “45-hour package” automatically covers your specific mandatory topics.
