California has a wide range of places to travel as a couple, from wine-country inns to quiet Mendocino bluffs. Here are options across the state that work for a weekend rather than a big trip.
Northern California Wine Country
The Farmhouse Inn in Forestville (Sonoma) has a Michelin-starred restaurant and a spa on site, set among vineyards. In Paso Robles, the Geneseo Inn sits above the vines with breakfast delivered to the room and easy access to the wineries along Highway 46.
Nick’s Cove in Point Reyes offers waterfront bungalows with fireplaces and a morning picnic basket; nearby you’ve got oyster farms and the headland trails at Point Reyes National Seashore.
North Coast
Harbor House Inn in Elk is a small Mendocino-county inn on a bluff above the Pacific, with a Michelin-starred dinner and soaking tubs. Mendocino town itself has a cluster of inns — Brewery Gulch, SCP Mendocino Inn & Farm, and Little River Inn among them — within walking distance of the headlands.
Lake Tahoe
For a winter trip, Edgewood Tahoe and The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe sit on the Nevada-side shore with ski access; Basecamp Tahoe City and The Coachman are lower-key. Summer swaps skiing for paddleboarding and the rim drive.
Central Coast
Carmel has walkable streets, a white-sand beach, and hotels from Hotel Carmel to L’Auberge Carmel. Just south, White Water in Cambria is a renovated oceanfront hotel near Hearst Castle. Both are close to Big Sur if you want to keep driving.

Southern California
Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs is a small Moroccan-style hotel with courtyards and a pool — a warm-weather pick. For something greener, the Ojai Valley Inn pairs a spa with mountain views.
Booking Notes
Coastal and wine-country rooms book out months ahead for summer and harvest (September — October). If you’re set on a Michelin restaurant at the inn, reserve the table at the same time as the room.
