California runs festivals year-round, from desert music weekends to coastal food fairs. The big ones sell out, so dates and tickets are worth locking in early; smaller town events are usually free and walk-up.
Music Festivals
The headliners are Coachella and Stagecoach in Indio (April), Outside Lands in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park (August), and BottleRock in Napa (May), which pairs acts with wine and food. California Roots in Monterey is the reggae-and-roots weekend (Memorial Day); CRSSD in San Diego is the house-and-techno one.
Food and Wine
The Gilroy Garlic Festival ended after 2019, but the Artichoke Festival in Castroville, the California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria, and the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival are still going. Eat Drink SF and the Pebble Beach Food & Wine events draw chefs and crowds in the fall.
Cultural and Free
Most counties run a summer fair; the LA County Fair (Pomona) and the OC Fair (Costa Mesa) are the largest. City street fairs — San Francisco’s Sunday streets, the Pacifica Fog Fest — are free and easy to drop into. Pow wows across the state, like the Malki Museum gathering near Banning, are open cultural events.
Timing
Summer is the busiest outdoor season, and winter has the desert festivals and the holiday parades. Lock in the dates and tickets early, since the big ones sell out.
