Channel Islands National Park is five islands off the Southern California coast, Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Miguel, and Santa Rosa, often called the “Galapagos of North America” for their endemic species (island fox, island scrub-jay, giant coreopsis). There are no car ferries and no bridges; the only way out is by boat, and Island Packers Cruises in Ventura is the park’s official concessionaire. This is a day-trip or camping destination, not a resort, so the planning is about the boat, the island, and the gear.
The ferry and the islands
- Santa Cruz and Anacapa. Served year-round from Ventura (and Oxnard seasonally). Santa Cruz is the largest and most visited; Anacapa is the closest, with the arch and a lighthouse.
- Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara. Limited schedule, roughly March through November, and longer crossings; San Miguel especially is exposed and weather-dependent.
- Reservations. Island Packers moved to a new reservation system; popular summer and weekend dates sell out, so book ahead (generally 60+ days for peak).
What to do on the islands
- Kayaking the sea caves. At Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz, guided tours run through the kelp and caves; multiple difficulty levels.
- Snorkeling. Channel Islands Adventure Company runs guided snorkel tours at Scorpion, with gear rental on the island.
- Hiking and camping. Each island has trails and primitive campgrounds (permit required); Santa Cruz’s Scorpion Canyon is the common intro hike.
- Whale watching and birding. Island Packers runs seasonal trips; gray whales in winter, humpbacks and dolphins in summer, pelagic birds on dedicated spring trips.
- Wildlife. Sea lions, seals, and seabirds are the easy wins; expect to see them on the crossing and from shore.
The islands sit inside the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, so the water is the draw: kayak, snorkel, or just watch it from the cliff trails.
Planning notes
- No lodging on the islands. Stay in Ventura or Oxnard before/after; book those early in summer too.
- No invasives. The park bans bringing nonnative seeds and plants; brush gear and food off beforehand.
- Check the park site. Wind cancels boats; the NPS page posts closures and conditions.
- Pack for wind and sun. It is cooler and breezier than the mainland; layers and water.
Final Thoughts
The Channel Islands are a boat trip first, so book the Island Packers crossing early. Pick Anacapa for a short visit or Santa Cruz for a full day on the trails.
