Silicon Valley (San Jose / Cupertino) is south — the company campuses are mostly not open to walk-in visitors, so treat it as a drive-by, not a tour. For kids, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (the 1924 Giant Dipper coaster) and the Roaring Camp redwood train are the easy coastal picks, ~1.5 hr south. Berkeley (north, ~30 min) adds theater and the university.
For history in the city itself, Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores, 1776) is the oldest building in SF, and the Presidio is the former military base turned national park with bridge views.
