San Diego rewards a plan that splits the city by neighborhood, because the attractions are spread across Balboa Park, the bayfront, and the coast, and traffic between them adds up. Below are the stops that justify the trip, grouped so you can build a day around each cluster.
Experiences
- San Diego Zoo. In Balboa Park, a large, walkable zoo with pandas-area exhibits, the Africa Rocks habitat, and a gondola and bus loop. Arrive early; it is a half-day at least.
- USS Midway Museum. The retired aircraft carrier at the bayfront, self-guided with docents who served on her. Walk the flight deck and the hangar bays; allow two to three hours.
- Whale watching and harbor cruises. Seasonal gray-whale trips in winter and spring, plus year-round narrated harbor tours past the skyline and Coronado Bridge.
- Kayak tours. La Jolla’s sea caves are the standard run, paddle-in if conditions allow, or a guided tour if you are new to it.
Landmarks
Balboa Park is the cultural anchor, 19 gardens and a cluster of museums (the Natural History Museum, the Air & Space Museum, the Museum of Art) in Spanish Colonial buildings from the 1915 expo. The Cabrillo National Monument, at the tip of Point Loma, has the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and overlooks the bay entrance and, in winter, the whale migration. The Coronado Bridge and the Hotel del Coronado on the opposite shore are the other postcard views.

- Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Coastal bluff trails above the beach north of La Jolla, with the rare Torrey pine and a lagoon below. Go early for parking.
- La Jolla Cove. Calm water for snorkeling and a sea-lion haul-out on the rocks; the underwater park is the draw.
- Mount Soledad. A short drive to a summit cross and 360-degree views over the city and coast.
- Sunset Cliffs. Bluff-top walking south of Ocean Beach, known for the late-day light; stay back from the unstable edges.
