Vibrant SF Events Calendar – Don’t Miss Out!

San Francisco runs big public events most of the year, many of them free to watch. The standouts are the Chinese New Year Parade, Carnaval, and SF Pride, with smaller film, comedy, and cultural festivals filling the calendar.

Chinese New Year (February)

One of the largest Chinese cultural events outside Asia, the celebration runs for weeks and ends with the Chinese New Year Parade through Chinatown — lion dancers, marching bands, and a 200-plus-foot golden dragon. The Flower Market Fair and the Chinese Community Street Fair run alongside it, with food stalls and performances.

Carnaval (May)

Carnaval is the Mission District’s Latin-American and Caribbean street celebration, closing with a Grand Parade of samba and salsa groups, floats, and costumes. The surrounding weekend has music stages, food, and dance performances along Mission and Valencia.

SF Pride (June)

SF Pride centers on a parade through the Castro and a two-day civic celebration in the Civic Center area, with live stages, drag performances, and the Dyke March and Trans March in the days around it. It’s one of the largest Pride events in the country.

Winter and Spring Festivals

Other regular events: SF Sketchfest (comedy, January-February), the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the San Francisco International Film Festival (spring), and the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown (April). Dates shift slightly year to year, so check the festival’s own site before planning a trip.

Good to Know

Parade days mean street closures and packed Muni lines — build in extra time and expect crowds. Most of these are free to attend; the film festival and some comedy shows are ticketed. Parking is scarce downtown, so transit or rideshare is the easier call.
