Palm Springs works as a short trip built around three things: desert outdoors, mid-century design and museums, and a calendar of festivals. You can hit a hike, a museum, and a pool in the same day.
Outdoors
Joshua Tree National Park is the big one — hiking and bouldering about an hour out. Closer in, Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Canyon have palm-lined trails on the Agua Caliente reservation, and the Aerial Tramway rides to Mount San Jacinto’s alpine trails. The roadside Cabazon Dinosaurs are a quick photo stop heading in from LA.

Culture and Design
The Palm Springs Art Museum covers modern and Native American art; the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum tells the story of the tribe that holds much of the land. Downtown is the place for mid-century architecture tours, galleries, and the Walk of Stars. VillageFest takes over Palm Canyon Drive Thursday nights with vendors and music.

Events
Spring is festival season: Coachella and Stagecoach in Indio, and Modernism Week in February for architecture. The Palm Springs International Film Festival (January) and the Desert X art biennial round out the year. Book lodging early — these dates drive prices up.

Good to Know
The city is gridded and easy to drive, but it’s hot — summer highs regularly top 40C, so plan outdoor time for early morning. Resorts and spas are the default stay; downtown hotels put you within walking distance of dining and the tram. If you’re flying in, Palm Springs International has seasonal direct flights from major hubs.
