Discover the Beauty: Where is the Pacific Coast?

The Pacific Coast is the western edge of the United States along the Pacific Ocean, running through three states: California, Oregon, and Washington. It is the region, not a single road or city, and the “Pacific Coast” label is shorthand for the coastline and the communities built along it, from the San Diego border up to the strait by Canada.

The coastal highway

In California the coastal route is State Route 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH), which runs from the Orange County area up through Big Sur, Monterey, and San Francisco to Leggett, where it meets US 101. It is a California road, not a highway that spans the whole U.S. coast; Oregon and Washington have their own routes (the Oregon Coast Highway, and Washington’s SR 112 and 105). The appeal is the same everywhere: cliffs, beaches, and pullouts with ocean views, and the drives are slow by design.

Coastal cities

The major cities from south to north are San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in California; Portland (inland, on the Willamette) and the coast towns of Oregon; and Seattle in Washington. Each is a different trip: San Diego for beach culture, Los Angeles for the entertainment and beach strips, San Francisco for the bay and headlands, Seattle for the waterfront and ferries. The cities are the easy-access points; the coastline between them is the quieter part.

Beaches and drives

The coastline mixes wide sandy beaches (Southern California), rocky coves and tide pools (Central and North Coast), and sea stacks and dunes (Oregon and Washington). The iconic California drive is PCH, especially the Big Sur stretch between Monterey and San Luis Obispo, which is the one to time for daylight and good weather; it closes periodically after landslides, so check status before a long coast drive.

Takeaway

If you are planning a Pacific Coast trip, decide which state and which cities first, then pick the coastal route for that state. In California, PCH (Highway 1) is the headline drive, with Big Sur as the must-time section. Check road and weather status for the cliff sections, since slides and fog close them, and plan the cities as your supply and lodging bases between the quiet coastline stretches.
