Californians Go On Vacation! ->

In the late 19th century, when leisure travel was generally an activity of the well-to-do, California boasted its share of luxury hotels. Posh resorts, such as the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego and Pasadena's Raymond and Green Hotels became destinations for affluent vacationers from around the world. This tradition continued into the 20th century, with the opening of resorts such as Humboldt County's Benbow Inn and the development of grand hotels in California's cities.

As increasing numbers of middle class families began taking vacation trips, first by train and then by automobile, more modest facilities were needed to serve them. "Tent City" just south of the Hotel del Coronado, opened in 1901, offering canvas rooms, a pavilion for concerts and dances, shops, cafes, and, of course, the surf and sand of the Pacific Ocean.

Auto camps provided sleeping quarters ranging from primitive to spartan, along with a place to park the car. Conditions for motoring vacationers began to improve in 1925 with the opening of the first "motor hotel," or motel, at San Luis Obispo on Highway 101. Soon motels could be found in almost every community in the Golden State.

By mid-century many Californians were taking their accommodations with them in the form of travel trailers, campers and motor homes, and facilities for these vacationers also developed along highways and at tourist destinations.
