We Built the Bridge

Preliminary Drawings =>

The people shown in these frames are some of the numerous workers who were needed to build the Bay Bridge. Their work was completed in difficult conditions, battling the Bay Area fog and wet weather, and long hours with often only a single steel beam between them and the waters of the Bay below. This workforce poured concrete, surveyed routes, drove innumerable rivets, painted the spans, bored tunnels through Yerba Buena Island, and welded girders in order to complete the construction in only forty months. On average, 6,000 people were employed at any one time during construction. The bridge was one of the largest public works projects in the nation, helping ease the affects of the Great Depression in California.
